Can Art & Design Festival: When art and cans coexist

Can Art & Design Festival: When art and cans coexist 1920 1277 adminEirini

During Can Art & Design Festival, art enthusiasts from all over Romania are given the chance to give new shape, form and, eventually, life to aluminium cans.

The 2021 edition presented 85 artistic creations, all in the form of paintings, while the six most popular artworks were rewarded with prizes between 500 and 1000 Euros. They are now the subject of exhibitions organised in cities like Pitesti, Cluj-Napoca, Baia Mare, and Constanta until the end of August.

This creative initiative is a project of Every Can Counts Romania, reaching now its eighth edition, which was by far the most important in terms of the number of entries and the quality of artistic creations. The purpose of this exhibition is to highlight not only the importance of aluminium as a recyclable material but also the artists’ vision of the world and of the environment. Among the winning artworks was the painting “Symbiosis of Generations”, by Maria Petrariu, which combines the portraits of two representative personalities in the fight for environmental protection and sustainability: Sir David Attenborough and the environmental activist Greta Thunberg.
The exhibition is organized in partnership with VIVO!, a chain of shopping malls in Romania, and brings together 15 of the most appreciated artworks of the contest, helping Every Can Counts to inspire and increase awareness about the importance of cans.

Making Every Can Count At The British Grand Prix

Making Every Can Count At The British Grand Prix 2560 1440 adminEirini

Every Can Counts UK joined forces with Silverstone race circuit to encourage people to recycle their empty drink cans at this year’s British Grand Prix.

With a crowd of over 140,000 fans in attendance at the race on Sunday Jul 18, and 350,000 in attendance across the weekend, the 2021 British Grand Prix became the largest event to take place in the UK since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

And with 30-degree heat over the weekend, there was no shortage of cans being enjoyed around the circuit. We knew we were in the right place to make a real difference!

Our partnership with Silverstone brought two head-turning can recycling installations to the event: our famous #EveryCanCounts Rainbow installation and brand new SILVERSTONE can recycling cages. Both installations were hugely popular photo opportunities, providing race fans with a lasting memory of their British Grand Prix experience while also keeping recycling front of mind.

While the cars were racing around the track, we also had a team of recycling ambassadors doing laps of their own around the venue. Our team conducted recycling surveys and spread the word about the benefits of recycling drink cans, while their can recycling backpacks made it easier for attendees to recycle around the circuit.

We’d like to think our messaging impacted Sebastian Vettel over the weekend, who stuck around after the Grand Prix to take part in a litter pick. Any cans collected during the pick were separated at a sorting facility and then recycled. Vettel commented: “I think it is important that we all respect the environment and don’t rely on other people to clear up after us. We have to start somewhere and each one of us can make a difference now.” Well said Seb – we couldn’t agree more!

Our ‘CAN do’ attitude clearly rubbed off on reigning champion Lewis Hamilton too, who took a crowd-pleasing home victory in Sunday’s race which only enhanced the electric atmosphere around the circuit.

We really enjoyed our first ever British Grand Prix and want to thank everyone who recycled their cans with us over the weekend. Aluminium recycles forever, so who knows – maybe those recycled cans will end up as part of a racing car doing laps around Silverstone one day!

Standing tall at four meters high, a colorful symbol of hope is greeting the visitors of the 2021 edition of the Giffoni Film Festival.

Located in the number one children’s film festival in the world, the Giffoni Film Festival taking place from the 21st of July until the 31st, this giant rainbow made from recycled drink cans is a sight to behold.

Imposing and bright, at four meters high, this impressive installation is presented at the festival by Ogni Lattina Vale (Every Can Counts in Italy) and  CIAL, the Italian Consortium for the Recycling of Aluminium in collaboration with Coca-Cola HBC Italia. The colorful sculpture is made using 3,000 aluminium cans, supplied by two world leaders in the production of beverage cans: Crown Packaging Manufacturing Italy S.r.l. and Ball Beverage Packaging Italia s.r.l..

An inarguably high-impact installation, the Every Can Counts rainbow made its appearance for the first time in the UK to highlight the importance of recycling empty drink cans in a creative and memorable way. Having appeared in Brighton, Manchester, and Cardiff, it now takes its first trip abroad! As before, its purpose is to promote a modern vision of the waste management system on a large scale and encourage good environmental practices. But it’s also a symbolic work that invites guests to look to the future with confidence, taking inspiration from the rainbows drawn by children during lockdowns with the wish that ‘everything will be all right’.

CIAL, a historical main partner of the Giffoni Film Festival, wishes to engage creatively with the people, especially the children visiting, using a symbol of creativity and thoughtful engineering. The Every Can Counts rainbow is certain to become the ideal background for the most beautiful souvenir photos of the Festival. At the same time, we’re hoping it will prompt even more people to embrace a circular lifestyle and #KeepTheCycleGoing!

Chaque Canette Compte to manage the overall recycling procedures on Tour de France Fan Parks

Chaque Canette Compte to manage the overall recycling procedures on Tour de France Fan Parks 2560 1920 adminEirini

Chaque Canette Compte and Citeo have entered an agreement with Amaury Sport Organization (ASO) for a more sustainable Tour de France. Our programme in France will be responsible for the complete management of recycling on the four Fan Parks of the Tour (Brest, Laval, Albertville, and Libourne).

Following the programme’s efforts to raise awareness in tens of thousands of spectators about the infinite recyclability of aluminium for the last seven editions, this expanded collaboration is a first for Chaque Canette Compte. With the support of Citeo, a dedicated CCC team will be present in all Fan Parks for the implementation, from A to Z, of sorting and collecting waste in order to ensure an effective recycling process that will also be an example for the general public.

The CCC live collection team’s goal is simple: to collect and sort 100% of the drink cans consumed in Fan Parks, as well as all other packaging. At the same time, their aim is also to educate thousands of visitors about the recyclability of aluminium drink cans and the importance of putting their empties in the right bin. To successfully meet this challenge, dozens of collection points will be positioned at strategic locations in Fan Parks, but above all, the live collection CCC team will constantly roam the area with its identifiable equipment (collection baskets), making them impossible to miss!

During these nine days, the teams will do their best to raise awareness about recycling, collect, correct any sorting errors if necessary, and count the cans and packaging consumed. The collection will then be handled by the relevant city services, heading to the nearest recycling center!

Ogni Latina Vale: A recycling alliance to protect the marine parks of Calabria

Ogni Latina Vale: A recycling alliance to protect the marine parks of Calabria 2048 1536 adminEirini

Our programme in Italy, launches an inspiring summer recycling campaign, supported by CIAL, Coca-Cola HBC Italia, and the Agency for the Regional Marine Parks of Calabria.

Covering the 11 municipalities that surround Calabria’s marine parks and equipped with the signature Every Can Counts recycling backpacks, the ambassadors of the initiative “In the marine parks of Calabria…every can counts” are on a dual mission. To recover empty beverage cans, while encouraging consumers to keep public spaces clean, and to raise awareness among residents and tourists about the importance of the circular economy.

“In the marine parks of Calabria…every can counts” is a joint initiative of Ogni Latina Vale, with EPMR – Ente Parchi Marini Regionali della Calabria (Agency for the Regional Marine Parks of Calabria), CIAL – Consorzio Nazionale Imballaggi Alluminio (National Consortium of Aluminium Packaging), and Coca-Cola HBC Italia

Running in July and August, the backpackers will visit both beaches and urban locations to inspire as many people as possible on the way. But there’s more. About 100 small waste separation and recycling areas will be set up on the beaches, with dedicated bins for the separate collection of cans, marked by a customised sail so that bathers can recognise the areas accredited to the project.

Bikes made out of 800 recycled cans will be donated to the municipalities

Aluminium is a permanent material, that can be recycled an infinite number of times, while preserving its properties forever.  Every drink can we put in the right bin,  can be easily recycled and transformed into new aluminium, ready to give new life to many durable objects at a significantly low environmental cost.

The cans collected during this initiative will be used to create Riciclettes, the now iconic city bikes made with the equivalent of 800 recycled beverage cans. The bikes will then be donated to the municipalities involved, to be used in the implementation of their sustainable mobility projects.

“The Agency for the Regional Marine Parks of Calabria was established in 2018 to protect and enhance the extraordinary biodiversity of Calabria’s marine and coastal environments, a treasure trove of biodiversity to be guarded and preserved for future generations,” states Ilario Treccosti, Extraordinary Commissioner of the EPMR. “In a fruitful team effort with the parks municipalities – which include the 2021 Blue Flags Praia a Mare, Diamante, Tropea and Soverato – a series of initiatives have been launched, including the ‘In Calabria’s marine parks…every can counts’ campaign.” For the protection and enhancement of the sea of Calabria, the Commissioner hopes that the collaboration with the Aluminium Packaging Consortium and Coca Cola HBC Italia, which began with this campaign, can be extended to other significant environmental education initiatives.

“Since its inception in 1997, CIAL has been acting on two fronts. On the one hand, it brings together the protagonists of the entire industrial chain to stimulate the sector’s sustainable development and, on the other, it promotes initiatives throughout the country aimed at raising public awareness of the importance of recycling aluminium, a precious raw material. There is no doubt that its recycling provides undisputed economic, social and environmental benefits. It is extraordinarily rewarding for us when, as in this case, we can cooperate with other organisations that are able to grasp the full value of our mission. In this project we have really teamed up with an organisation set up to protect a breathtakingly beautiful stretch of our national territory and with one of the most important and best-known brands in the world,” says Giuseppina Carnimeo, General Manager of CIAL.

“We are proud to be able to carry out this initiative with the Ente Parchi Marini della Calabria and CIAL, because it fits in perfectly with our sustainability commitments,” says Giangiacomo Pierini, Director of Institutional Affairs and Communications at Coca-Cola HBC Italia. “For years we have been working to make the concept of circular economy a reality, both through awareness and collection projects like this one and, upstream, in the design phase of our packaging, in which we continue to reduce the raw materials used. I”.

The results of the “In the Calabria Marine Parks…every can counts” campaign will be announced during the annual “European Sustainable Mobility Week” from 16 to 22 September.

Even though the aluminium can recycling rate is already high, both in Belgium (98%) and the Netherlands (82%)*, there’s always room for more people joining and #KeeptheCycleGoing.

This summer, Every Can Counts Benelux launched its first digital campaign that focuses on three main facts about can recycling and showcases the qualities of aluminium drink cans. Various polls and playful messages ran on Instagram and Instagram Stories in Dutch and French, engaging creatively with people, and using “Follow” ECC Benelux as the campaign’s main call to action.

The result? Although the campaign is still in motion, there’s already been a 100% growth in the number of followers on the Instagram account of Every Can Counts Benelux!

In Romania, summer weekends are for beaches…and recycling, thanks to the ExtravaCANza campaign

In Romania, summer weekends are for beaches…and recycling, thanks to the ExtravaCANza campaign 1920 1277 adminEirini

From Friday till Sunday for the entire July and August, the weekends are dedicated to ExtravaCANza and recycling! Guests of Mamaia, the most famous beach resort in Romania, are prompted to place their empty drink cans, regardless of their shape, size or colour,  in the reverse vending machine installed by Every Can Counts Romania on the seaside. In exchange for every five cans deposited into the machine, participants will receive a free drink in a can, as well as a voucher that allows them to enter a contest with various prizes.

The ExtravaCANza campaign has the support of special partners like Coca-Cola, Bergenbier, Penny Romania, GreenPoint Management, Can Pack Recycling, Vimetco Alro, and is now considered part of the  Romanian coast’s summer rituals.

The goal of this initiative is to provide guests with the necessary support to recycle their drink cans, given that 69% of Romanians believe that there are not enough recycling bins in their country, according to a European poll conducted by Every Can Counts in 2020.

The ambassadors of the European Recycling Tour conquered over 19 famous landmarks to recycle every can

The ambassadors of the European Recycling Tour conquered over 19 famous landmarks to recycle every can 1920 1282 adminEirini

The first-ever ‘on the go’ recycling campaign by Every Can Counts ran simultaneously in 15 countries and creatively communicated the value of drink cans recycling to over 4 million people across Europe.

Spotted in more than 19 European locations on the same day, over a hundred Every Can Counts ambassadors with colourful recycling backpacks roamed evergreen parks and busy urban locations to raise awareness about the importance of circular economy and proper waste disposal. The European Recycling Tour 2021 was initiated on the 5th of June, World Environment Day, with a goal to celebrate public spaces and inspire people to put their drink cans in the right bin.

From the waterfronts of Ardèche in France and Pražská Náplavka in Prague, to the beaches of Siófok in Hungary and Alimos in Athens and iconic parks such as Madrid’s Rio, Vienna’s Prater and Amsterdam’s Vondelpark, the programme’s spirited backpackers conquered major corners of Europe. And then there were the interactive games, competitions and installations, including a gigantic heart-shaped recycling bin in the old town of Genoa and the absolute showstopper rainbow installation located in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester; measuring four metres high and seven metres wide, and made out of more than 2,500 recycled drink cans, this arch highlighted the importance of recycling in the most spectacular way.

Partnerships with local authorities, eco-conscious influencers and popular drink brands, helped generate extra attention for the campaign which reached more than 4 million people, both in the field and online.

A tour that highlighted our common values about recycling

Social media fans had the chance to engage with a playful AR filter on Instagram and answer a short online survey regarding recycling habits. With over 8000 citizens completing the questionnaire across Europe, the results show that a staggering 96% of respondents believe that protecting the environment is fairly or very important. However, only 40% of the respondents recycle their drink cans when consumed on the go, while 60% say that more recycling bins in outdoor spaces would help them recycle more. When asked about the key criteria of sustainable packaging, the majority prioritised the following: “made from 100% recyclable material”, “infinitely recyclable”, and “can be produced and recycled inside Europe”.

60% of the respondents say that more recycling bins in outdoor spaces would help them recycle more.

“Aluminium drink cans meet all the requirements for sustainable packaging highlighted by the majority of respondents in our research, which is very encouraging. But it’s also clear that more work needs to be done from all sides when it comes to recycling on the go and putting our empties in the right bin for proper waste disposal and recycling”, says David Van Heuverswyn, Director of Every Can Counts Europe“. This visually impressive activation across Europe delivered a strong message about people acting in unison when it comes to achieving a truly circular economy, and if we are to reach our vision for 100% can recycling throughout Europe, we need all actors to do their part: the metal packaging industry, EPRs, local authorities, brands, as well as consumers”, he continues.

The European Recycling Tour 2021 took place in Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Powered by the enthusiasm encountered during the campaign, each country is now busy with an ever-evolving calendar of similar activations planned across their regional offices. These ongoing awareness initiatives will become the groundwork for a new, annual pan-European activation. In the meantime, let’s #KeepTheCycleGoing by always putting your metal packaging in the right bin!

World Environment Day 2021: Every Can Counts Launches European Recycling Tour

An inspiring ‘on the go’ recycling campaign will run simultaneously in 15 countries and 19 locations across Europe to celebrate outdoor spaces and promote a more circular economy.

On the 5th of June, from lakes and city squares to parks and shopping streets, there will be a sight to behold all over Europe. Small teams with colourful backpacks will be buzzing around on a mission: to encourage people to keep public outdoor spaces clean and recycle their drink cans wherever they are.

Prompted by World Environment Day and a pandemic-induced increase in littering observed all over Europe, this initiative by Every Can Counts is a coordinated creative campaign taking place simultaneously in 15 countries and 19 locations. The backpackers participating in the European Recycling Tour 2021 will be seen in Austria, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

The first- ever can recycling tour in Europe!

While 2021 marks the first time this backpack campaign will run on a European scale, the concept behind it originates from 2017. What began as a local ‘on the go’ recycling and awareness activation will now serve as a platform to help amplify key messages and encourage small but important behavioural changes.

“Outdoor public spaces provided a much-needed escapism during the pandemic, and now is our turn to help protect them from an impending ‘littering pandemic’, a phenomenon we have sadly witnessed lately on a global scale. But World Environment Day is also a great opportunity to inspire people to put their empties in the right bin and invite them to be part of our vision for a 100% real aluminium drink can recycling. At the same time, the amount of energy saved by recycling (95%) corresponds to an equivalent saving in GHG emissions, making every can we recycle a key enabler for a truly circular economy”, says David Van Heuverswyn, Director of Every Can Counts Europe.

Buzzing backpackers on a mission to inspire and recycle drink cans across Europe

With outdoor public spaces becoming havens for relaxation, exercise, and escape during the pandemic, people have never been more aware of their important function. But when it comes to recycling in general, and “out of home” in particular, more work needs to be done. In a European poll conducted by Every Can Counts in 2020, while more than three-quarters of respondents said they always or often put their drinks packaging in the recycling bin when at home, only 48% recycle in outdoor locations. At the same time, 93% of Europeans would like to see more recycling bins on the streets, in public spaces, parks, beaches, or on trails.

The European Recycling Tour aims to remind people that keeping public outdoor spaces clean is a truly collaborative effort. Small everyday acts, like proper waste disposal, can help us all towards a more sustainable living and a healthier planet.

The key message will be communicated playfully through various activities on the day, such as outdoor games, dance acts, and the now Instagram-famous rainbow of cans art installation. Each tour location will celebrate public spaces in a special way, with the backpackers roaming Amsterdam,  Ardèche, Athens, Belgrade, Brno, Bucharest, Budva, Dublin, Genoa, Kotor, Krakow, Ljubljana, Madrid, Manchester, Prague, Siófok, Thessaloniki, Vienna, and Wroclaw.

Always engaging in a socially distant way, they will encourage citizens to keep their surroundings clean and ask them to drop their used drink cans in their backpacks to make sure they will be recycled. People will also be offered to participate in short surveys with prizes and share their own recycling stories on social media channels with #EuropeanRecyclingTour2021.

The Every Can Counts One Minute Brief

The Every Can Counts One Minute Brief 2560 1280 adminEirini

Our programme in the UK partnered up with One Minute Briefs, challenging Twitter users with the following design brief:

Create posters that highlight the infinite recyclability of drink cans and inspire people to do the right thing with their empties. #EveryCanCounts

The one-day challenge got more than 200 entries! Twitter users submitted their unique designs and sketches. Each one of them highlighted aluminium as a permanent material, and the environmental benefits of drink can recycling.

There were so many gems among the submissions that picking the top 3 designs was no easy task for the Every Can Counts UK team.

The winners list:

1st place: @rowan_softley

This design ticks all of our boxes! It’s creative, clever, and it communicates the benefits of can recycling in a simple but really effective way.

2nd place: @jackhally

What better than a classic movie reference to help bring the recycling story to life? This minimal design is subtle but it really makes an impact. Great work.

3rd place: @StuartWitts

A clever design that both grabs attention and clearly illustrates the timelessness of a recycled drink can. Nice one Stuart!

Honorable mentions:

However, the submissions’ list doesn’t end here. Feeling inspired? Take a look at the collection with all the entries.

Every can counts and by recycling your empties you leave a positive impact on the planet saving valuable energy and resources. Spreading the message was the purpose of the brief and, ultimately, it was creatively achieved!
