Romanian Can Art & Design Festival awards the best works of art and design made with used beverage cans

The awards ceremony that unveiled the winners of the contest Can Art&Design Festival took place during the Gala Awards for a Clean Environment on Friday 11 December  2015, in presence of representatives from the aluminum industry – Maarten G. Labberton, European Aluminium,  and Andy Doran, Novelis. Other sponsors of the contest were IBM Romania, Auchan Supermarkets, UNARTE and ALRO, the Slatina based producer of primary aluminium.

The Can Art & Design Festival concept was launched in 2014 to demonstrate that used aluminium beverage cans are a valuable resource, not only for making new cans or other products but also reusing them for artistic purposes.

The second year of the contest saw more than 100 entries received in four categories: Can Bag Design, Product Design using used beverage cans, and hand-made art objects of used beverage cans by adults, and again by children. In addtion awards were given for the five most popular objects, based on voting on Facebook.

The winners of each category won EUR 500 and shopping vouchers were given to the winners of the Facebook competition :

  • For the Can Bag Design category, the award was granted to Mădălin Stancu for a bag design that illustrates the five stages of crushing a beverage can before it ends up in recycling.
  • In the Product Design category, the award was won by two graduates of the Faculty of Design, Cosmina Vîlcu and Ana Vasiliu, who made a very original lamp consisting of 14 used beverage cans called “Lamp-Nai”.
  • In the Hand-made art objects – Adults category, the award was given to Alexandra Putineanu for a complex work called “Vintage Neighborhood”.
  • In the Hand-made art objects – Children category, the Award was won by a student from Ploiesti city, Nicolae Mares, for building a diorama illustrating the urban environment.

Winners, voted for by the public on Facebook,:

  • First place was taken by a work called “train” made by Mihaela Mares.
  • Second place in the ranking was won by a work named “Winter in London” made by Iancu Andreea, Ioana Negoiţescu, Zoicaş Andra Gabriela and Matei Nedelcu Teodora.
  • Third place was granted to Goarnă Alexia, and Mihai Alexandra and Vlăsceanu Georgian took respectively the fourth and fifth places.
  • The Facebook album features all the designs entered in the competition
